The placenta, also called mother cake, connects the blood circulation of the mother with that of the embryo. It provides it with nutrients and oxygen and takes disposes of all waste products. In a normal birth, the placenta is expelled as afterbirth together with the eggskin.

f the afterbirth is not ejected three hours after birth, a veterinarian should be called, otherwise the uterine lining of the mare could be permanently damaged.
